The main attractions were Tasmanian devils , echidnas , dingoes , common wombat , cockatoos , eastern quoll , black swans and the eastern grey kangaroo. The Zoo Neuwied had early large breeding success. For example, the German first breeding of the South African Bontebok and the first breeding in captivity world wide of different parrot species. In 1980 the zoo was leased from an animal dealer with the idea to buy animals to put them in the zoo on display and then re-sell  them. There for elephants , gorillas and hippos were temporarily housed at the zoo. But there were problems with the protection of species. There for he had to give up the land in 1985. Neuwied Zoo was almost closed then. In 1984 the foundation of the association of Zoo friends took place which was financed mainly by donations, the proceeds from animal sales and receipts from admissions . Since the takeover by the Friends of the Zoo, it  has changed dramatecally. In Neuwied Zoo a lot was built since. Among other things, an exotarium and aviaries, increasing the predator house and building of a seal enclosure. In 2000, a new lemur house was built in 2003 the new lion enclosure was completed and in 2004 a penguin facility. A new home for 14 Humboldt penguins. In 2005 10 coati arrived at the zoo on a new enclosure and in 2006 the new apes house was completed . The new exotarium opened in 2011. 38 enclosures are here with reptiles and amphibians, birds and small mammals as well as insects and spiders - a total of more than 120 animals. Even today Neuwied Zoo has many breeding success. The biggest success was when ten cheetah babies were born in a day, of which eight were raised
